These picture books are improvisations like improvised solos on an instrument. I make them rapidly for spontaneity so I have so far 50 or so. I turn the page fast as I draw and paint, either extemporising on a theme or jumping to a new idea with each page but all within a constraint of subject matter, colour choices or tools. The books all tell a story either in their geometry as a seed develops turns into the unexpected or as a human tale unfolds. A pattern always emerges.
The Book Of The Fire And The Rain (selection)
Winter is always a challenging transition. A time of incubation and interior examination. To help with this year's change I looked at landscape, the darkening nights, the sharp contrasts, inspired by the view of trees and winter lights through the trees from my window and leapt in imagination to other views - beautifully desolate.
The Book Of The Gods (selection)
An illuminated sacred book of contemplation, of trials, of meditation, of divination, of progress. The interpretation is for the pilgrim to discover for themselves. There are patterns, doorways, labyrinths, spirals to experience, as a method for enlightenment. The gods are made of dessicated goop (an artificial material made from pva glue) and came about through intentional accident. The evolution from a tiny doorway, expanded into universal themes, contracting to the egg/chick, potential for the next cycle.
The Book Of The Angels (selection)
An illuminated book for wishing upon.
The Book Of Back Behind Above And Below Beyond
Accidental forms (goop) appear - Pareidolias. They are cast like runes and make themselves into a story of the universe. As above, so below.
Sound is colour and colour is sound - contrapuntal, harmonious, balancing and contrasting to create these sonata sketches.
There is relationship from page to page following a black line: a story evolves.
